Title: What book are you currently reading? Pt II
Post by: MoP on September 02, 2006, 02:47:22 AM
Since the other thread seems to have died I figured we should start another.

I'm currently reading The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch.

Well, no: I'm reading the Count of MC, not Le Comte de MC.

Actually yes, in engish, those infidels with their so-called Anglican Church. Burn them all, I say.

Hmmm.. Three books atm.

A Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking
Enigma, a biography of Alan Turing - (name escapes me atm)
Freakonomics - (names escape me as well).

When I finish one or two of those I'll return to some good ole fantasy reading.

Hi all-New to site-looks pretty cool

Just finished reading Seven Pillars Of Wisdom by TE Lawerence.
A personal account of the arab revolt against the turks by Lawerence of Arabia himself.
Totally fascinating-they were a much harder breed in those days.

He was twice stung by a scorpion and weighed less than 45 Kilos at one point, passing out due to continual dysentry but he saw the job through and still retained the presence of mind to keep a diary.  RESPECT.

Cheers all

BTW also recently read A briefer hisory of time..

Currently reading Shell Scripting...O'Rielly  (sad. must get out more)

last I read that, it was still by (Charles?) Stross ;) (amazon confirms)

I'm a bit reluctant though, as he isn't nearly as good as some of the sci-fi writers I'm used to...

though their names...well, Iain M. Banks for one, if you need something of the absurdly funny variant, then Peter F. Hamilton, for really nice stories, or, last but not least, Alastair Reynolds, for convoluted stories.

Each of those is miles better then Stross, but then Stross is the one who is releasing some of his works CC licensed, and that work was a hardcore gadget novel, which I couldn't stand for more than 5 pages, before my interest came to a grinding, bleeding stop, and I quickly looked elsewhere for entertainment..

About a third of the way through The Darkness that Comes Before by Scott Bakker...its very well written for a debut novel, but I'm sort of hoping it starts coming together a bit soon. It hasn't captured my imagination yet, certainly not like The Lies of Locke Lamora (which is a rollicking good read from start to stop).

On to the Warrior Prophet by Bakker - having real trouble giving a shit. Aside from Kellhus and Achamian (although less and less at every page) I cannot seem to care one way or the other for any of the characters. Which is a shame, because the writing is good.

The Invention of Clouds: How an Amateur Meteorologist Forged the Language of the Skies by Richard Hamblyn

I've had a short attention span for reading and have been flicking between the books. Too much computer stuff at work and too short a lunch break causing much tiredness and an inability to bother to do anything once one arrives home from work...

oh... and I'm still going on my El Nino book too... can't remember who it's by though. it's a little... technically written and it's a bit hard to sit down with and sink your teeth into.

I read Interesting Times around post #69.

Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic are really quite cumbersome reads, along with Faust Eric and some of the Witches books.
With cumbersome I mean slow, almost tar-like on occation and not very funny.
There's some funny stuff there, but otherwise not as interesting as some of the later books.

Havin' now read a lot of his books in a short go, I've come to the conclusion that he hates clerks. :lurk:
There's quite a few antagonists who are petty minded paper-pushin' clerks or officials in his books.

In Soul Music there's the President of the Musicians Guild, in Interesting Times the tax collector, in Guards! Guards! the head of the Assassin's Guild.
There's others aswell that work along the same formula, like the Head Priest in Pyramids or the Inquisitor dude in Small Gods.

Tryin' to decide if I'll read Mort or the Fifth Elephant next. Still got a few more to go through after that. :P

reading the first and last freedom - krishnamurti ... it's... interesting, page by page I'm not sure what I think about what he's saying.. some of it seems incredibly obvious and not worth writing about, some of it seems like absolute bollocks and some of it seems pretty insigthful... only 80 or so pages in so hopefully he ties it all together at some stage later on.

around 80 pages in so far and... wow... i honestly can't believe someone wrote this book

I tried to get some kind of idea of what it was about from reading the blurbs on the back cover.. and it's only now that I've actually read a bit that I realise why most of the people who commented on the book refused to let their names be shown

wow

A Shadow on the Glass

And longwindedness doesn't bother me. What bothered me was the characterization. I remember some prose like: "person such and so had a terrible past that made her this way." It just bothered me that he just stated it like that instead of showing it through the actions and feelings of the characters...

Yes, its a children's book, but don't let that fool you. Neil Gaiman is just weird! I still need to read that book though. He wrote two picture books for younger children called The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish and The Wolves are in the wall. Jacqueline Carey - "Kushiel's Justice"
I'm working on getting there, heh. I've just been really busy or else I would've finished it when it came out. The thing is.. I started readin the series during my summer vacation last year (as in over a year ago). And I got halfway through "Kushiel's Avatar" before I put down the series. Then I was at work, at school, and just overall busy so I dropped it until now when I've started picking it back up.. however.. that too is a problem because I have a problem with readin too many things at once:

"Kushiel's Avatar" by Jacqueline Carey
"Gods Behaving Badly" by Marie Phillips
"Son of Avonar" by Carol Berg
"Arrows of the Queen" by Mercedes Lackey

I'm like halfway through Kushiel, a few chapters into Gods, 1/3 way done with Avonar and just started Arrows (for like the 20th time).

I just finished Thirsty by MT Anderson. Its about a world where vampires exist and a teenager is slowly discovering he is turning into a vampire. Its a rather interesting take on the usual coming of age story. This guy also wrote Feed which is set in a futuristic world where space travel is like catching a bus to go down town and where everyone is implanted with a microchip that "feeds" them what ever information they need. I highly recommend both books.

Now I'm reading Storm Front by Jim Butcher. Its the 1st book in the Dresdon series. I'm only a few chapters in but so far, so good.

Finished up  Storm Front and now I'm moving on to book 2 in the series -- Fool Moon. They're definitely entertaining books; however, sometimes the writing is a bit too sarcastic for me. I have a feeling the author really interacts with life the way Dresden does and is using his books as an outlet for it. Kind of how RJ lived is life through Rand, but this author knows how to end a damn story :P

Wheel of time, crown of swords. Reread ofcourse :) Read the first seven now, without skipping a page. I wonder how long that will last :\
Hopefully amol will come out next year, as planned. Can't wait to get some closure on the longest (in time, and books) series I've ever read.

Just read Lukyanenko's Twilight Watch (which wasn't as good as the first, or long enough), and Hobb's Renegade's Magic while travelling...

Winters Heart. Amazing how fast of a read this book is when you skip the boring parts about Elayne.

In the last month or so, I've re-read the first three trilogies by Robin Hobb (farseer, liveship traders and tawny man), bout to kick into the fourth (soldier's son).

Read Stephenson's newest, Anathem, which is pretty kick-ass.  Somehow he blended monasteries with universities, and then kicked in some superstring/parallel universe theory.  And dropped it all in a post-apocalyptic future on a planet that's -almost- like ours.  As I said, pretty kick-ass.

Also been working on some of Keith Laumer's old stuff.  I found a bookstore that had a bunch of his shit, paperback and hardcover, so I've been playing catch-up for about 10 months now.  That guy was fucking prolific.

Read the newest in the Runelords series, The Wyrmling Horde.  Seems like Farland is about to wrap things up, but hell, he's only gone 7 books so far, and the last two haven't been very big.  Good page-turners though.

Dying to read the next in a few series, such as James Clemens' Godslayer chronicles (Shadowfall and Hinterland being the first two), the next by Patrick Rothfuss (sequel to The Name of the Wind, in think it's named Wise Man's Blood or something), and of course WoT and aSoIaF.  Fuckers.

I haven't posted books in a while. So here it goes...

The Road by Cormic McCarthy

Enders Game by Orson Scott Card

Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyers

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Atonement by Ian McEwan

The entire Sookie Stakehouse series (roughly 8 books) by Charlaine Harris

Small Favor by Jim Butcher

Nights in Rodanthe Nicholas Sparks

I think that's about it. There are probably a few books I'm forgetting about. I'm in between books right now as well. Thinking about picking up the WoT series again.

Little House on the Prairie  :D

Just finished Flowers for Algernon, good little book, sad but good, and a quick easy read.

What did you think about this book? The gf loved it, but there's been a few that she's recommended it to that have hated it...

We both really liked the movie, though.

I enjoyed the movie. I wasn't a huge fan of the book. It was beautifully written, but I struggled to want to pick it up. Briony's character development in the book was hard to swallow. I read it for a book club and out of all of us who read it, no one really enjoyed it. I would suggest just watching the movie and perhaps reading another one of his books.

It's interesting, if infuriating by times.

Hmm, yeah. I think the gf's the only one who enjoyed it that I know. And if it was beautifully written, that'd be the reason she liked it despite other issues with it. :)

Small Favor by Jim Butcher

This is the Dresden files is it not?  Are the books as good as the series, or even have anything to do with it?  Why I'm asking is they ran one season, set everything up, and then apparently cancelled it.  Granted, i haven't had cable in the last year and a half, so I don't know if they've brought anything out since....

Yes, that's book 9 I believe. I've lost count. It wasn't the best book in the series, but it was an interesting development to the story.

The book and the tv series are two different worlds. Yes, they're slightly related, but the books go more in depth than the show. We watched the show first and then started reading the books. Honestly, I fell in love with both worlds. I was extremely disappointed SciFi canceled the show after one season and as of right now there are no plans to bring it back -- what a shame.

If you liked the show, you should try to books. Everyone I know who've read them enjoy it :)

Nearly finished Salvation by Peter F Hamilton...the interesting structure holds the book together and leaves me wanting the next book now.

I’m also reading Authentic Happiness by Stiegelman. This is for more personal reasons and a bit tough to get through at times but has some pretty useful pointers.
