Title: Judas Unchained
Post by: MoP on October 29, 2005, 09:24:09 am
Just finished it today...it's a good end to the Commonwealth Saga, not great, but it does close off most of the plot lines in a satisfactory manner. However, there was one thing that is really bugging me (well two actually, but the second is sort of peripheral). Just a note, spoilers ahead for those who don't want to know...

OK, so when Tarlo is on Boongate just after he's blown up the gateway to halfway and before Vic kills him he mentions that he has succeeded because Qatux has made it through. Now to me that implies heavily that Qatux is the Starflyer/alienPrime. Yet it's never adequately dealt with by the end - actually, when the Marie Celeste is royally screwed by the Planet's Revenge it was intimated that the Starflyer was inside the vessel. I know that Hamilton has signed on to do a trilogy in the same universe but 1000 years later so this may be dealt with in that series...or I could be reading it entirely wrong (although Qatux as the Starflyer makes alot of sense and actually makes you question the motives of the High Angel as well). Still, for what was one of the primary plot threads it was a less than satisfactory conclusion.

The other thing that bugged me was what exactly did the Cat do that was so bad? I realise Hamilton's probably done the smart thing by leaving it dangling - more suspense and all, and not primary to the plot, so it doesn't bother me as much as my that he left it hanging.

Anyway, overall and enjoyable read.

I re-read Pandora's Star so that I could then read Judas Unchained properly, and enjoyed both books immensely....until...

The ending was so lame that I had to scan the internet to see if my questions of doubt were answered somewhere, and that's how I hit upon your comments. I queried "judas unchanged qatux"! and found that you had exactly the same problem with the ending of Judas that I had---definitely, my take was that Qatux was the Starflyer, which explained why Tarlo destroyed the force field and allowed access to the portal. But then, the Barsoomians practically worship Raiels? Is Qatux truly a Raiel? Why is he never mentioned again? It all seemed obvious, at that point, that Qatux took over Tiger Pansy and used her to get back to the Marie Celeste. It also explains why Qatux would want to merge with Paula so badly, and why the constant reference to "trap" "this is too easy" etc.

My feeling, at the end, was that we knew what was going to happen--i.e. Qatux is Starflyer, etc.--but didn't know quite how it would play out. As it was, it's good that Hamilton at least TRIED to tie up some of the loose ends, but I suspect that he was as fatigued by the long, drawn-out finalé as we were and just wanted to end it and get on to other things.

So, thankyou for validating my impressions.

Meanwhile, as for Cat....I was decidedly unsatisfied with everyone's extremely negative attitude toward her, especially as she was so obviously competent and polite and friendly in return. My impression was that Cat was someone I would want as a friend--under any and all conditions.  With all their knowledge of her past, how did they have the courage to continuously insult her?

Thirded those opinions: Qatux' role isn't making sense, since it is logical to assume him to be the starflyer, and I was rather surprised by the anonymous entity that then was plugged into the starflyer hole in the end...
Not fun.

Qatux.. get out of this forum and never return. You are new here, and therefore must be crushed.

As if he didn't already.
