Title: Baby Thread
Post by: frgsonmysox on November 06, 2005, 05:42:11 PM
I had to share this picture.  The quality sucks, but it's so cute.  Chris and I took Anthony to get his pictures done today and they gave us a disk with all the photos on it.  And photo quality on the disk sucked.

Anyway

Why don't you just start a thread with his pics and update it with new ones from time to time?

Thanks Amanda. Frgs consider this not just an advice. If you want to keep  continue posting pics, make ONE thread for it, a Anthony-o-rama (or Baby-o-rama whatever) all other threads will be closed from now on.

Sure, good idea.  And you sticky it please, because it sure as hell can't be worse than the shit..er link-o-rama thread at the top of this page, and she won't have to go searching for it whenever she wants to post a pic (once every 2 months) because it's fallen onto the 10th page with all the other spam in this forum. :p

I may have no kid, but I'm gonna post a baby picture just because this one is so damn cool.

Baby vs. Cat:

Baby wins!

(Yes, I know that it's highly likely that the image is photoshopped. It's still cool though.)

isnt it true that all babies are born with blonde hair and blue eyes, to fool the father into thinking that the child is his, so that he will not kill it at birth?

Well, the exact color of the two components varies from culture to culture and race to race and whatnot, but you get the point.

I might be wrong, actually. Please make a note if his eyes change when he gets older. Anyone with children a little grown will be familiar with the fact that their hair changes. My hair changed from dark brown to black. Etc.

Title: Baby Thread
Post by: Fred's Bimbo Girl on November 17, 2005, 03:33:53 AM
at first, a lot of babies have a blueish hue to their eyes but that's because their eyes are brand new or something. mitchell's eyes changed to their current colour after about 4 weeks, and i doubt they're going to change because both his father and i have blue eyes ... see genetics 101 :)

mitchell's hair may get darker. i'm still blonde, and his dad had blonde hair until he was about seven when it went brown. his eyebrows are just a tad darker than mine, so maybe he won't go that dark.

oh, and thanks amanda! :) i think he's gorgeous, but i'm his mum! :inlove:

dunno how comfortable you are but...

how much does he weigh now? and how long is he? and how are YOU doing (i know some people just seem to snap right back after having a baby... but not everyone) and is he sleeping whole nights yet? and how many times has he peed all over you after being exposed to the air during a nappy change. and I bet he still has that milky baby smell, and he's not cholicy is he? and well, you get the drift...i always need details
Title: Baby Thread
Post by: Fred's Bimbo Girl on November 18, 2005, 10:01:48 AM
well, i'm always willing to talk about mitchell to anyone who will listen! he had his 7 month check up this week, so i can tell you he weighs 9kgs and is 71.5cms tall (you'll have to convert yourselves if you don't speak metric!). he's slept through the night for months now and has never been a bad sleeper right from the get-go. we've only had a couple of peeing incidents (and mostly all over dad), and you soon learn when a doodle is armed and dangerous :)

honestly, i couldn't ask for an easier baby. he's been an absolute dream and i love having him in my life :inlove:

That's great news. I bet he absolutely swims in his bed atm. Haven't had any pics of him in a while. How old is he now?

he does look so small in his new bed.  But he rolls around so much he's using the whole thing.  By the end of the month he'll be 18 months - 1 1/2 years... so fast.

I'll post some more pictures tonight.

Technically not a picture of a baby, just my progress...

I'm only six months along, and as far as I know there's only one in there... I feel like a beach ball!  :?

 WTG FF, how about you totally start picking all together on her. Yes, that's how we make people feel welcome here at FF and that's how we attract new members.

I'm closing this thread, clean it up and then you can go on bitching about smoking and being pregnant somewhere else and leave this thread for the baby pics. No fucking need to make it this personal.

Post by: Indigo on May 27, 2006, 10:36:01 AM
Fucking FINALLY.

So after I go in for a routine checkup, being past my due date, the doctor decides that since I'm not making any progress on my own, to induce labor the next day and keep me in the hospital. This makes me rather happy, as I was quite donw being pregnant.

So after 12 hours of medicine to soften my cervix, which seemed to do nothing but give me pain, they started me on pitosin, which usually stars labor in a couple hours.

Usually. Unless you're me.

They ended up maxing out my dosage of it, and after 8 hours of absolutely zero results, decided it was c-section time. While scared at first, this went okay, and they gave me some kind of painkiller that really knocked me for a loop, seeing double and almost complete incoherency. It was kinda fun. :)

But the point of this story, besides my absolutely failing at labor, is that Ethan Xavier Tackett was born at 4:32 pm, EST. 9 pounds, 15 ounces, and 21 inches long. He's huge, and that's probably why I didn't labor at all. My body was all "Oh HELL no."

Only a couple pictures for now.

Me and Ethan: http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/885/airiethan1ri.jpg
Jason (dad) and Ethan: http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/6715/gh0stlyethan8cn.jpg

Thanks to everyone who gave me support and well-wishes. :)

So you use air freshener and vent the room and cannot go outside to smoke, but don't smoke around him? You are a really BAD liar... And sadly, it's not me who deals with it, it's your baby, because you and your "man" are a selfish oafs.

Well, passing judgement upon others is what humankind does best. And most often we need someone else to point out our wrongs and our faults, 'cause it's bloody hard to pass judgement on yourself.

We can't always be sugar sweet and nice to each other. If you, I, Amanda or anyone else thinks something sucks we should point it out. Without different opinions this board (and the entire bloody world) would be really boring.

You've got a point actually, but it's a double-sided matter to begin with.

On one hand I still get this pathetic feeling when someone gets so upset about (for me) trivial things such as smoking when a baby is in the house, and I feel that Amanda is the Satanic drama queen from Hell.
On the other hand... it's not that hard to quit smoking...and for all you know your baby gets lung cancer next year. Parenting a dead baby is not a lot of fun.

Overall I find it ironic that Amanda only cares about ashtrays when babies are involved. Last time I checked most of the dead smokers were adults. Does that mean she actually cares more about the spouse of the members here than the members themselves? The thought bitters me like a poorly sugared cookie.

Thanks Devstah.

Wolfstah, all I'm sayin' is that it seems that Amanda only bothers to spew bile, not say anythin' nice or constructive. How would you like it if people only bothered to throw shit at you? Would that be nice?
And before you start to remind me furthermore about the importance of people havin' different opinions, hear out my thoughts on the subject of smokin' first.

I do agree that Akstah shouldn't smoke around the kid and that it would be better for her and the baby if she didn't smoke at all, atleast until the kid is older. Sucks for the kid if mom develops cancer and dies when the poor child is just eight years old. But, adults have a technical freedom of choice. Kids just got to suffer the consequences. (How did you spell that again?)
Sure it sucks if mom smells of tobacco and has a hackin' cough, but hey - she's allowed to make her own choices.

And yes, I know that this is also double standard, comin' from me - who smoke like a small chimney on occations, but last time I checked, I can't unfortunately lactate. Nor do I have kids. Neither do I smoke around children. I make sure, that when I smoke, others don't have to suffer from it. :|
And aimfox can keep the hormones for himself. ;)

C'mon people, keep the Baby Thread free of flamewars and filled with pictures of gnomes instead! :D

Wake up people. You know as well as I do her baby won't get lung cancer next year and die.But he COULD die from SIDS- which mostly effects the idiots who smoke around their children. Her baby isn't an adult. He is developing. He aslo cant' say "Mommy, Daddy you are choking me." It's fucking pitiful and to be blunt, it makes me VERY ANGRY that any retard can pop out a baby then smoke around it. It really sets me off.

So whatever. Defend the smoking mother and father. Back to cute baby picutres, but for God's sake, no more shots with freaking tobacco and ashtrays around your kids. I've had more than I can stomach.

http://www.entnet.org/healthinfo/tobacco/secondhand_smoke.cfm

Who Is At Risk For Secondhand Smoke?

Although ETS is dangerous to everyone, fetuses, infants and children are at most risk. This is because ETS can damage developing organs, such as the lungs and brain.

Secondhand Smoke And Its Effect On...

Maternal smoking also is associated with neonatal death from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, the major cause of death in infants between one month and one year of age.

Children's lungs and respiratory tracts: Exposure to ETS decreases lung efficiency and impairs lung function in children of all ages. It increases both the frequency and severity of childhood asthma. Secondhand smoke can aggravate sinusitis, rhinitis, cystic fibrosis, and chronic respiratory problems such as cough and postnasal drip. It also increases the number of children's colds and sore throats. In children under two years of age, ETS exposure increases the likelihood of bronchitis and pneumonia. In fact, a 1992 study by the Environmental Protection Agency says ETS causes 150,000 to 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections each year in infants and children under 18 months of age. These illnesses result in as many as 15,000 hospitalizations. Children of parents who smoke half a pack a day or more are at nearly double the risk of hospitalization for a respiratory illness.

The Ears: Exposure to ETS increases both the number of ear infections a child will experience, and the duration of the illness. Inhaled smoke irritates the eustachian tube, which connects the back of the nose with the middle ear. This causes swelling and obstruction which interferes with pressure equalization in the middle ear, leading to pain, fluid and infection. Ear infections are the most common cause of children's hearing loss. When they do not respond to medical treatment, the surgical insertion of tubes into the ears is often required.

The Brain: Children of mothers who smoked during pregnancy are more likely to suffer behavioral problems such as hyperactivity than children of non-smoking mothers. Modest impairment in school performance and intellectual achievement have also been demonstrated.

http://www.epa.gov/smokefree/healtheffects.html

# Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause asthma in children who have not previously exhibited symptoms.
# Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
# Infants and children younger than 6 who are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk of lower respiratory track infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
# Children who regularly breathe secondhand smoke are at increased risk for middle ear infections.

The relevance of this is we had a woman there who was a grandmother at 29.  O.O

She has now graduated to climbing stairs, opening doors, climbing out of her crib, and giving me one continuous heart attack.

:/ She got them done at 8 weeks.  I have issues with earrings.  I can't wear them because of an allergy I developed.  After talking to a few doctors they all agreed that if I got them done with her earlier she had less of a chance of having problems later.  I know, bad mommy.

Title: Baby Thread
Post by: Fred's Bimbo Girl on May 10, 2007, 02:01:48 PM
it's your call frgs, but the thought of her ripping out her earrings by accident or getting a nasty infection is just too much for me. i was 14 before my mum agreed to let me get my ears pierced. it didn't hurt at all (iri you wuss! ;) ). sadly, fletcher loved tugging at my earrings so much i stopped wearing earrings a while ago and now it looks like i'll have to get my ears repierced *sigh*

if i ever have a daughter she will at least be able to look after her earrings herself before i get her ears pierced.
Title: Baby Thread
Post by: frgsonmysox on May 10, 2007, 02:04:29 PM
I guess thats one of the benefits to her getting them done young.  She has never touched them.  They have just always been there, so she doesn't fiddle with them at all.  Which causes less infections.

FBG: repiercing is not necessary, the holes will never close.
I got my ears pierced at age four (after incessant whining about it, I've always loved the shiney) and wore earrings till age sixteen or something. Then when I got married, I got matching earrings with the necklace that I wanted to wear, so I went to the jeweller to get my ears re-pierced... and he just picked up some earrings and put them in... no piercing necessary. There's just a ball of 'fat' in the piercing that you can push aside. It's better to have it done by someone else instead of yourself, because of the angle or something.
But he told me that it'll remain an open hole forever. So there you are :D

it's actually going quite well for us. i was putting it off until fletcher was a little more independent, but one day mitchell announced, "going in there do wees!" so i didn't get much choice! he's now able to go out and about in ordinary jocks without fear of accidents, and takes himself off to the loo to do whatever he needs to do. i still need to keep an eye on him though as otherwise the entire toilet roll can end up down the pan!

My (favourite) cusin had a baby some days ago but it didn't go too well.

I heard the guy was pretty blue when he got out because lack of oxygen.
Also, he had a small bleeding, which scares me even more. >_<
I guess one could always hope for the best.

With the facit in hand they should probably have used caesarean section.

Heard a few things from my aunth but it seems like she might have been over exaggerating a bit. Still, my sister isn't that sure and I'm not that sure. People my sister know at the hospital (nurses and doctors) think the story sounds pretty bad.

I'll let you know once I learn more.
I think it's pretty difficult to say until he starts developing a bit.

For me it raised the question what I would do in the same situation.
If I say that a damaged child shouldn't be allowed to live I'm pretty much a selfish monster... yet...

hey frgs, and i'm not saying this to be mean, but do you think that anastasia may be autistic? it's rare for girls, but not unheard of. i worked with a woman whose two sons were autistic and learned a lot about it as a consequence.

The thought has crossed our mind.  When Anthony was younger they thought he might have Aspergers, but they ruled it out.  So we've been down that road before.  Anastasia shows some signs, but like you said it's very rare in girls so it's not something they are thinking about too heavily.

with autism, the sooner it is diagnosed and treatments put in place the better the outcomes. the lady i worked with, her two boys attend a regular primary school. they went through intensive therapies and went from rocking/head-banging-on-the-floor/freak-out-at-the-slightest-thing kids to children you would never know were autistic unless you were told they are. it's amazing.

Just a note, I didn't take these, my sister-in-law did.  We kind of had an impromptu day out, for being such a good girl at the doctor yesterday.

Showing off the new hat she picked out, and demanded I buy for her:

Which got blown off on the slide, after I took that damnable soother from her:

But she got them back, and we went to the swings:

Where of course, I had to push:

And she lost her hat again, and wanted to race another kid:

Before retiring to the hippo, which has maps of organs in three languages:

Which she wouldn't come out of:

So is Erin implying something by changing her MSN avatar to what looks like a pregnancy test strip?  Any confirmation on this?

I'd just ask, but as I said in IRC there's no telling if she's had her lithium today.
Long story short, it turns out I've had endometriosis for a hell of a long time. Reading stuff about it it could affect my mind as much as my fertility. It took a long time and a very good doctor to suggest i have somewhat "exploratory" surgery to determine the cause of my seeming infertility. he'd thought it was PCOS, but it turns out i had severe phase 2 endo. he removed the diseased tissue surrounding my uterus, separated my ovary from where it had fused to my pelvis and cleared out my blocked fallopian tubes.

a couple of weeks after the surgery we were blessed and i fell pregnant. we've had a hell of a time over the first trimester with repeated bleeds that were unexplainable and me being admitted to hospital because of that. but we made it through and are now 18 weeks. we find out if it's a boy or girl next week and both Matt and I are extremely happy and really excited to have the chance to become parents. This will be our only child. There is a likelihood the endo is rebuilding now so i will go onto quite a strong pill after the breastfeeding is over and done with to prevent as much regrowth as possible. we've been told that this pregnancy was extremely unlikely and we are lucky. we've been told that chances of it happening again would probably rely on more surgery.

surprisingly enough for most of you lot, i'm not crazy or even slightly unbalanced. i've been really content and life is fairly good right now. we're having our floors tiled in the next month and have bought all the main things for the babies room and even my mum has been quite excited about having a grandchild!

my dad is still in his nursing home and is slowly slowly getting "worse" with his alzheimer's. i was sad to see that terry pratchett is also suffering from that crappy disease. my brother is getting married to an awesome girl in october.

We're due in November, on my dad's birthday :)

this is the most recent ultrasound pic, we get a really long scan next week which should be astonishing in the amount of detail we can see.

and Tim darling, i don't actually read this forum anymore... i did see your post though and just wanted to let you know. i hope you're all well.

we'll be in Adelaide having one last holiday before i strongly resemble moby dick in August and are happy to catch up with SA'ians.

we didn't clean his pipe... but we gave him (and continue to do so) craploads of money for the most excellent treatment he provides! in the next week or so he gets a $1000 retainer so he's ours at the drop of a hat. lucky little egyptian cutie ;)

Shall do Auryn. Thinny knows some of the details. I think we're flying into SA on the 19th or 20th of August. We'll be tooling around the hills for the first 3 or 4 days then have a weather conference over the friday and weekend. We'll be staying at hotel rendezvous of something like that. some swanky thing in the middle of town. we leave on the monday 26th?.

Congrats on the baby Erin and Matt!  I can't wait to find out what you are having :)  Ours is a little surprise and we're having a ton of fun with that, but I don't think I'd like waiting to see what you are having much lol.  I have a friend with really severe Endo and was told that she'd be infertile by the time she was 25.  Well she did the surgery, got pregnant with their first son and figured that would be it.  Nine months later (while breastfeeding nonetheless) she managed to get pregnant with their second son.  Now he's nearly two and they just found out that she's pregnant again!  The doctors are in shock, especially having told her it would be impossible to conceive ever again, so I wouldn't count more babies out entirely.

how many have you got now frgs?

i know there is always a chance... but i'm really content to just stop after the first. it will be better for everyone if we can focus on just one. we'll have more money and more space and can concentrate more time on one child. we really can't afford for me not to work (and i choose not to stop working for longer than necessary). we can be a lot more relaxed and flexible. we'd also have to consider either moving or putting on another storey or something if we did have more than one because we'd just run out of room in the house. to keep a spare room for any guests we'll be moving our office to the back room which is currently the dining room. i'm going to buy a room dividing bookcase and a desk to wrap around two walls and some other little adjustments better facilitate the current space.

so yeah... we're good with one and one it will be! hopefully i can avoid having to have a hysterectomy! one of my neighbours is in the opposite boat to us. she has the same problem but found out just a little too late so they've spent thousands trying to do IVF and various other things and she's ready to get her hysto whenever she has the time off work. i just don't want to be subjected to that disappointment before i'm 40.

Erin- we're pregnant with our third right now.  I'm due in a few weeks.  I hope you don't need a hysterectomy any time soon.  My friend with endo is getting a hysterectomy when they deliver her third.  Her doctor told her it was too dangerous for her to have another cycle.  She feels okay about it since she's beaten the odds anyhow.  I read a study not too long ago that showed that using cloth menstrual products helped to reduce the severity of endo.

The sheers look nicer in person, and to be blunt, we like traditional old people stuff. Modern isn't our taste anymore, most modern is cheap. Expensive modern is very pricey, and still - not our taste. We are in a country suburban area with traditional homes - and the age range is 30-40 with young children, not a high-rise Toronto condo.

that's because you're not a baby!

and i hate women who lose weight after babies. my baby-weight hangs around until i stop breastfeeding them, and then it all falls off. *sigh* the things we do for our kids!

I'm sorry FBG.  With Anthony it took me a year to lose the weight.  With Anastasia I was down to my pre-pregnancy weight by 6 weeks.  I'm thinking it should come off easy again this time, especially nursing two kids.

little duckie pjs!!! how sweet!!!

very bootifulls :)

i went to antenatal classes yesterday and was the smallest in the room. i've put on 11.5kg!!! i barely have a bump and am 29.5 weeks! apparently the baby is totally normal size though. she measured 25 weeks 6 days (head), 25 weeks 4 days body at the 25 week mark. i'm either going to explode in the next few weeks or *hopefully* will just be able to have not too much more excessive flab!

Gorgeous pics Amanda :)

I'm 30 weeks tomorrow and generally speaking the doctor is putting my size down to good muscles and the baby not being overly large. She's a week behind size wise but he said she's average. I'm happy with that. I was a bit worried she could be really big because Matt's so tall. I'm quite happy that she's not and as long as she doesn't grow exponentially larger over the next few weeks I think I'm pretty confident about an all natural birth with no drugs! See how that works out... there's every possibility that my plans become annulled because of need.

Her name is Veronica Iris Pearce :) My Grandma's middle name and Matt's Nanna's middle name.

Post by: frgsonmysox on September 21, 2008, 04:14:25 PM
David's okay.  He has issues breathing sometimes though, especially at night.  A month or so ago he turned blue so we took him into the ER and they said it looked like he was refluxing fluid back into his lungs.  They are trying him on different meds to see if they help, but so far he hasn't taken well to any of them.  In the meantime they are doing a study to see if it's true Apnea or Apnea caused by reflux so he has to be on the machine for at least a month/23 hours a day and at the end of the study they'll decide he if he needs it longer.

Erin- I had David all naturally.  He was only 5 lbs 14 oz and it was extremely painful once I began pushing.  Thankfully I only pushed for about 3 minutes, but it seemed like eternity.  I have a friend who has had 5 kids, all 10+ lbs and had a much easier time of it.  So I don't think the size of the baby has much to do with it.

Ya, I had a friend who popped out 2 babies with ease. She said it wasn't that painful at all. And she was small framed and slightly overweight/flabby, not at all in shape. Her total labor with pushing never lasted longer than 45 minutes, at which point she said was only like a very bad period cramp. Her babies were a decent size, not too big not too small, 7 or 8 pounds I think?

I don't get it.

Congrats FBG!

We're 34.5 weeks now. In the home stretch and could go any day.

I'm having to start weekly visits to the hospital as of tomorrow for some CTGs to check our heart rates. The Obs is mildly concerned Veronica might be a little small for her gestational age. Most likely due to my endometriosis affecting the placenta. I'll have to go have some other tests and another ultrasound with the fancy high def guy who can do the 4D scans. By the time all my tests are done in a couple of weeks the Doc will have a better idea of whether or not V needs to come out and she may be delivered early or left to decide for herself when to make her entrance. Tis all a bit concerning, but I know we'll be alright whatever happens.

My brother got married last week and I successfully managed to avoid being in -most- photos. I have seen one- am definitely looking as wide as I am tall... but I shall share it with y'all cos I can!

Me, Matt and his mum

I'm only 5'4" :) Matt's 6'6". I have put on about 14 kilos now, but even I don't notice most of the weight. I'm not too much bigger than I was- about one dress size, I just have weird proportions that render normal clothes useless. The dress is a Maternity evening dress from a company called Ripe. I just couldn't find anything in shops at all that I could wear so had to order online. It hides the worst of it really well. I took my fashion advice from Angelina Jolie for this one!

for reference... I looked like this in February/March just before we got pregnant...

yes, just to confirm what piter told you all - little hayden james joined the family on 14th october weighing 8lb 5oz. he looks just like his brothers did when they were born, and he's a happy little soul who eats and sleeps well. we're home from hospital now and i'm recovering well from the caesar. i'll post a pic a bit later when i've sorted through what's on the camera.

good luck for the arrival of veronica erin - you sound like you're in good hands with your docs though, so i'm sure it will all be fine.

i learnt pretty early on if i stuck my foot out at a certain height with reasonable velocity i could cause great harm to my brother when he was annoying me. it's just a shame my mum liked him more... the pain inflicted upon me made the joy derived from the exercise somewhat negligible.

and then there's sweet, well adjusted matt... who used to throw his brother down the stairs and "torture" him, thus requiring psychological intervention!

brothers! pfft! who needs em?!

I am just now realizing when I upload them to the gallery, I can save them as PNG's and they won't get garbled the way the JPG's do. I have a massive job underway to redo all of them *gag*

Anyhow... here are the ones I caught as .png...

Both your girls are growing up very prettily Amanda.  I wouldn't want to be in your shoes when they enter high school though... you'll be fighting off boys by the dozen.  :)

just like yours mandie! i wish halloween was more of a thing here - we only had one lot of trick or treaters this year. although i had a good laugh at their dad who had a string of garlic round his neck as his two kids were dressed as vampires!

back to brothers and wrestling for a moment - i am mystified by the whole thing. it must be part of the y chromosome because, totally unprompted and uncoached, mitchell and fletcher will happily spend half an hour wrestling with each other on the loungeroom floor, having a great old time. i don't understand it at all, but they seem to enjoy it!

I'd assume telltale signs of going into labor...

I hear that if your water breaks it means you're about to give birth ;)

Good luck Erin!

FBG  :luv:

Erin Ok so like, when I was going into labor, my water never broke either baby, they broke it at the hospital. My GF's all broke and then they went into labor, From what I saw in them, it wasn't painful, just a gush like you peed your pants.

For me, it was crampy cramps that were irregular, then 8-10 minutes apart, getting closer and closer, stronger and stronger. Hot baths do help, as do lower back massages. Very exciting!!! And each labor is different, some hurt more than others, don't be afraid to get an epidural if it hurts more than you can handle. Are you wanting to go natural? What are your plans for labor? how much are you doing at home? Are you with a doctor or midwife?

for me my labors were so quick that by the time I was in labor I was nearly out.  My contractions never progressively got closer together like they tell you.  I would have contractions 20 minutes apart for about an hour, and then immediately they would be on top of each other.  My water never broke prior to labor.  And from what I understand PROM (pre-mature rupture of membranes) is very uncommon.  My water always broke mere minutes before delivery.  The babe would actually break my water as they began to crown.  Some people are in labor for hours, or even days.  Some have very short labors like me.  My labors are 2-4 hours long from start to finish.  Some women push for hours, some for minutes.

Every labor is different.  You'll know when you're in labor though, there won't be any "is this it?!"

Sounds like you're both blessed.  Few things are more miserable than a protracted labor, or so I'm told.

Re: Kat's comment on prolonged labor... Well... for Emma I was in labor for over 24 hours, no drugs. That was "fun"... erm I mean fucking misery.

Hannah was almost 17 hours of hard labor, (not including mild contractions that were workable.) She was induced and she was posterior, or face-up style backwards, labor was induced at 1:30 pm with gel, and within minutes cramping started. At 4:30pm I had to really work through contractions, and at 1:00am when I finally went into the hospital I was 5cm only... bah...  they broke my water but it didn't do too much. I didn't have her until 9:30am the next day. Because she was wrong side up, she was getting stuck in my pelvis and they had to give me pitocin and try to turn her, she turned, it hurt.. BAD. Really bad. Once she turned, all was OK, but by this point I demanded an epidural. Epidurals are SUPER (even though for me they gave me a single dose because I was 8cm at the time and they didnt' want it to interfere with pushing, I had to beg again later for another half dose, and I had lots of break through pain and had to work through contractions, come pushing time it was all worn off :( ) Her being backwards and all made everything a lot longer than it should have been. So... ya... long labor is miserable.

My girl friends generally had labors last anywhere for a half hour to about 6 hours. My sister in law recently was less than a few hours total - very start to very finish. It's no fair  :'(

Amanda, we see a gyno/obs through the local private hospital where the baby will be delivered. There are various midwives at the hospital who will also assist with delivery but I haven't had a lot to do with them as my doctor has his own midwife in his rooms to do check up stuff at each appointment.

Due to the difficulty in getting pregnant and the frequent challenges that have popped up during the pregnancy so far, the doctor will be there through it all. At this point it's really hard for me to say that I will or won't do anything in particular. I am really bad with needles (tend to go into shock when they use them on me) so I would love to avoid an Epidural but it's one of those things... I just can't assume I'll be in a position to actually make that choice. If the doctor or midwife at any point might think it better for me to use some kind of drug I think I'd be best just to accept their advice and do it. I know that I want to avoid Pethidine like the plague. Not a big fan of stuff like that... Matt's mum had it when he was born and it took him a long time to breathe. I will just let it all start and see what happens and deal with it as it goes. I don't see the point in drugs if perhaps I can do without...

Then there's the fun bit that Veronica's been in a posterior position for a bit. At a recent ultrasound the tech said she's in a slightly more axial position (which I assume means not quite entirely posterior). I've been doing alot around the house to try to get her to move... again... just deal with that when we get there. My doctor has me using a contraption called Epi-No to help avoid tearing, and I'm drinking Raspberry Leaf tea to hopefully shorten the labour and make the contractions easier to deal with.

The only reasonable thing I can really do is go in with few expectations and just take everything one thing at a time.

Funny thing, today I was at the hospital for my weekly CTG (to check the baby's heart rate against her movement to ensure she's still coping because she's smallish) when I obviously was experiencing some Braxton Hicks contractions. The machine measures contractions of the uterus and it was going off. I had been feeling yuck all morning with horrible stabbing pains across the fundus... those would apparently be BH! I just want it to be over now. I want to meet my baby and give her some cuddles. Hopefully she'll come sooner rather than later. We're good to go any day now, just waiting waiting waiting!

Sounds like you have an AMAZING doctor! Being in good medical care can really make the difference in labor, including comfort. As far as the epidural, you will not see the needle, they do it behind you. It feels odd, but not like a shot, so if you have one... it feels more like a spine buzz than a needle.

And your labor will be soon judging by all the pains and false contractions you are having.... your body is preparing itself :) I'm excited for you! What names did you pick out?

I hope it is soon.. Starrting to feel zooey and have had enough of not being able to sleep. (I am currently up at 4am because laying in bed wide awake is boring me to tears, I've been awake every second night recently).
