True Blood
« on: September 23, 2008, 05:24:24 pm »
True Blood is an American television drama series created by Alan Ball, based on the Sookie Stackhouse book series by Charlaine Harris. The series is produced by HBO in association with Ball's own production company, Your Face Goes Here Entertainment.[1] It premiered on September 7, 2008.

...

Thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin." Religious leaders and government officials around the world have chosen their sides, but in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, the jury is still out.

Local waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), however, knows how it feels to be an outcast. "Cursed" with the ability to listen in on people's thoughts, she's also open-minded about the integration of vampires — particularly when it comes to Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 175-year-old living up the road. But as Sookie is drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding Bill's arrival in Bon Temps, that tolerance will be put to the test.

I saw some ads for it while in the US and it looked just awful, I must say. I read one of the books it's supposed to be based on and that book was decent. Nothing special, but not bad either. The stuff in the ads was not like it at all and made it look like some badly done emo-wannabe show...

The show has to be taken with the same spirit as the book --- utter trash. Its my guilty pleasure book series and the show is rather enjoyable. Don't knock it until you watch it :)

A Vampire also hinted that Sookie was not a normal human name, so that's a story thread.

haha...read the books if you're really curious. There are 7 in the series I believe, but I very seriously doubt the TV show will follow books 2-7 very closely. So far season 1 is on par with the first book, though they've made a few changes.

True Blood has been signed on for season 2 after only 3 episodes. So far it seems to be a hit.

I'd much rather stab my eye out with a screwdriver than read trashy vampire novels with a character named "Sookie"!

1. Since when was Dune trashy?
2. Muad'dib's another language (if made up), so I'm not going to make a judgement call on that.
3. There's enough trashy vampire novels as it is...

1. The parts that the son wrote.
2. Vampires are not humans.  She might not be human, or at least partly so, as hinted by the vampire.  They are not allowed to have their own language/names?   And it is not as if all Asians are called Michael or Helen, now is it?
3. True.

1. Brian Herbert didn't write Dune nor come up with Muad'Dib.
2. So? "Sookie" is still a terrible name...

1. He still wrote parts of Dune.  Were they trashy?
2. Yes, and any "normal" human being called Muad'Dib would suffer the same affliction.

Seriously, are you that dense? Brian Herbert was 18 when Dune was published. He didn't come up with Muad'Dib. Frank did. Dune...

Honestly, does nobody think beyond their snap judgements?  I'd be willing to bet that 'Sookie' is a nickname.

No, unfortunately, Sookie is not her nickname. According to the book and the TV series, its her real name.

I never stated that he came up with Muad'Dib, I stated that he wrote trashy novels.  This, of course, excluding the ones his father wrote.

I watched 2 episodes and it was indeed fairly enjoyable if not exactly good. Might watch some more if I don't have anything better to do...
