If not for FF, I'd definitely say Konami, even with chronotrigger.

I loved Contra and a few other games like that.  up up down down left right left right B A start :)

Didn't Konami do blades of steel?

The first thing I truly remember playing in an arcade was Time Pilot by Konami. Since then I had a long healthy relationship with the New Wave company from Japan. (Ko-Nami: New Wave)

Anyways: I played the Contra, CastleVania (vampire killer on MSX) and Gradius (Nemesis on MSX, followed by Nemesis 2, 3 and Salamander - (life force on nes). - don't forget Parodius. And Konami is bringing GRADIUS V to a playstation2 near you shortly.

Ah, the fond memories. Just 2 years ago the last secret items were found in Maze of Galious - a 10 year old game!

Konami's finest asset would be Mr Kojima.

The original Metal Gear was a total different approach to games. Sneak-em-up was invented. First on MSX, then a port to the NES. (lets not speak on the NES Metal Gear 2 game -ever- shall we?)

It's MSX sequal: Solid Snake was the first game that maked me feel some true emotion through a game. The "We are soldiers and cannot escape war for it is part of us" speach Big Boss gave at the end of that game is so shockingly beautifull.

Snatcher and Super Deform Snatcher. Oow. You really need to treat yourself to SD Snatcher. Unique fighting system, GREAT story. And cool jokes poking fun at Bladerunner, and the Metal Gear jokes are great. SD Snatcher is the coolest RPG I have played EVER. Randam finding out he is a robot is cool. And the talking beeping noises RPG's of it day had. (No DVD/CD that allows spoken words. The brilliance how it is used when you figure out your wife is a snatcher. First she talks in high beebs and then the pitch drops to an eerie low beeb when she shows her true colour and says "-high beebs- Whats the matter Gillian? -low beebs- "Don't you like me any more?"

Get an MSX emu, and play it. Yes, FFX is prettier grafics wise. But Tidus discovering what he is doesn't compare with the plotline of SD Snatcher.

Zone of the Enders II: Bringing Vic Viper back as a mech (the little airplane from nemesis/gradius) send shifers down my spine.

FFX from Square was nice to play, but it's just a GFXed up staple RPG as I have seen hundreds coming from Japan in the MSX days. I have played numerous of them and frankly FFX doesn't feel that much different - Gameplay wise. Remember that in Nippon hundreds of these games are released. We just see a few - Like FF- in Yurp and the USA. They are nice, but not very new.

Square doesn't do much original games. Their games do what they do, but don't really wow me that much. Konami tries to do new things. Or at least different things. I won't see Square do an arcade shooter, a dancing game or a sports game. They do what they do well: Solid but unimaginative RPG's.

Not all konami does is gold but when it is, it really is. Square does it all just silvery.

Konami? As in Track & Field, Time Pilot and Scrambler Konami? That company's a legend!
Didn't know they were still in the business. :)
