What is a Citizen?
« on: December 21, 2004, 03:24:27 AM »
What is your personal view on the requirements/responsibilities of citizenship?

I did a paper on it a month ago, and asiit stands there are two major thoughts on citizenship.

Liberal citizenship is simply a set of legal rights for the individual along with a responsibility to vote in democratic elections (and to vote responsibly).

Republican citizenship has the legal rights and responsible voting of liberal citizens, but it also places an emphasis on the citizens duty to contribute social capital, ie, citizens are expected to volunteer and contribute to the state with no other thoughts than for the betterment of the state.

Your thoughts?

Perhaps as a long-time emigrant on a temporary visa I have a rather simplistic view but a citizen to me is anyone who holds the passport of a nation or the right to have one. I would say the closest of a responsibility for a citizen is to respect the law, but it is also the responsibility of non-citizens too. Voting is a 'civic duty' but if someone doesn't care at all about politics I consider it better for them to not vote than do something silly like a donkey vote.
